Can you do better than Mike Luckovich?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial cartoonist Mike Luckhovich is taking a vacation and the editorial board is running a contest called “Think you can do better?” wherein they invite readers to submit their own editorial cartoon for a chance to appear on the editorial page.

Okay, let’s review. Mike Luckovich has won just about every award for editorial cartooning this year and there’s someone out there that thinks they can do better?

  1. AJC is trying to recover some support after that PR fiasco with the American/Jihadist torture panel. Subscriptions are way down, advertising revenue is a problem, editorial board regularly alienates a lot of the readership, so AJC tries a bit of “we’re involved with our readers.” Even if people don’t think they’re “better than” – they still try out for screen tests even if DiNero is being considered or still try out for the Steelers even if all the regulars are returning.

And they probably won’t pay anything for the published submissions, either. Is that evidence they’re really a conservative publication?
