Kevin Kallaugher or KAL, has been working at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Imaging Research Center on a 3-dimensional George W. Bush puppet which is now ready to be unveiled according to E&P. KAL did a demonstration of the puppet at the AAEC convention in Denver and was officially unveiled at a press conference Monday (and will again on the 25th at the Baltimore’s Walters Art Museum where KAL’s exhibit “Mightier Than in Sword: The Satirical Pen of KAL”
The puppet will converse and answer questions in “real time” at the June 12 and June 25 events, said KAL, adding that digital Dubya “can be animated daily in reaction to current news.”
KAL discussed and showed footage of the Bush puppet at the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention in Denver, and also talked about his creation with E&P. He said he first molded his creation out of clay, and then had the sculpture scanned in 3-D to get computer-animated. Now, the digital Bush has dozens of mouth movements, eye expressions, and other capabilities — with KAL supplying the voice. “It helps that I’ve worked as a puppeteer,” said KAL.

Thank you for the great feature story on KAL and his quest to animate political cartoons. Would he please come to my cartooning class at the Summer Institute for the Arts to meet with my advanced cartooning students?
