Get Fuzzy gets into the Pearls Before Swine

Not sure what was going on with Darby Conley’s Get Fuzzy yesterday. Both yesterday’s Pearls Before Swine and Get Fuzzy had the same Pearls artwork but in Get Fuzzy, Satchel was Photoshopped over the artwork. Judge for yourself if this was a successful crossover.

  1. It didn’t make sense until I read the last few ‘Pearls before swine.’
Then it was quite tickling; seemed exactly like a prank Bucky would play on Satch.
    Giggle!

P.S: Didn’t know Rob’s a comic strip artist by profession. Quite fitting, especially since he lives with Bucky. Nyahaha!

  3. These two (Pearls’ Pastis and Fuzzy’s Conley) are friends who often make reference to one another in their strips. They and others had a great gag a year or so ago (April Fool’s, perhaps?) where they all used the same dialogue about a Ouija board. This, however, is strange. Conley drew himself and Pastis in Monday’s strip (that wasn’t Rob, Betty), and as a gag it’s a bit played out by day four today. Couple that with the odd past couple of weeks that found Bucky stalking Satchel and saying “booger” each day, and one wonders if Darb has misplaced his mojo.

  5. I thought it was an ackward cross over. Since I don’t usually read Pearls, I really wasn’t into the loop on the whole thing anyway.

I thought the booger episode was drawn out way to long without any real conclusion or punchline. I started to wonder if Darby was getting burned out and was trying to work a simple story line to buy himself some lead time so he could take a break.

Who knows. This hasn’t been Get Fuzzy’s best couple of weeks.

  7. We got the cross-over joke – small as it was – on Monday. I’m really starting to believe Darby Conley has run out of ideas and is now trying to be “cutesy” for the critics. The quality of the strip has really slipped over the last few months, although it is still better than anything else out there – except for “Tom the Dancing Bug.” The worst strip by far has to be “9 Chickweed Lane.”

  9. I don’t think Darby hasn’t jumped the shark yet, but I’ll be glad when this cross over thing is over.

  10. Its hard to really speculate about whats going on here. The artists are friends.
Maybe they have a larger concept that is not apparent yet. Or maybe Darby Conley?s is on vacation and his bud is “covering” for him while he is away. Doesnt like that whole on sabbitical rerun thing.
I dont know how cartoonists get paid.

  12. John — you’re right that it was Conley, and not Rob, in Monday’s strip, but he wasn’t on the phone to Pastis. That was apparently an editor or somebody else at the syndicator.

Pastis did appear, but not until Wednesday.

  14. Have really liked Conley’s work in the past, but wondered if he had handed the strip over to someone else the last few weeks. Maybe it’s cutting edge, but I don’t see the depth it’s shown before. When did Rob become a cartoonist? He was in advertising before. Maybe Mr. Conley’s seeing if we take our comics too seriously.

  16. This week the animals look to be drawn by a different hand. I hope all is well and will return to normal soon.

  18. I kept waiting for *some* explanation, some conclusion to both the crossover episodes and to the booger week, but I was left high and dry and am still wondering what they were supposed to be all about.

And, to the person above who thinks 9 Chickweed Lane is the worst strip ever, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve always loved that strip! I think, however, that it was more entertaining when the focus was more on the mom, before Edda moved to NYC.

  20. I DON’T THINK ‘GET FUZZY’ IS FUNNY ANYMORE. IT USED TO BE SWEET AND ACTUALLY PORTRAYED CATS AND DOGS DOING “NORMAL” CUTE CAT AND DOG STUFF. NOW IT’S JUST PLAIN MEAN. I SKIP READING IT HALF THE TIME AND I USED TO LOOK FORWARD TO READING IT. WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SAID THIS TO THE EDITOR, BUT COULDN’T FIND A LINK. MAYBE U COULD FORWARD. THANKS
