The Herald (Monterey, CA) has done a major shake up on their funnies page. They recently polled their readers to find out which features were the most popular and which ones should be dropped.
Results:
The top three favorites also were clear-cut: “For Better or For Worse,” “Zits” and “Blondie.”
From there, the voting got a little tighter, but this is how it’s all shaken out:
To the daily lineup, we’re adding: “Pickles,” “Baby Blues,” “Bizarro,” “Mutts,” “Boondocks” and “Baldo.” On Sundays, we’re adding those plus “The Other Coast,” “Pearls Before Swine” and “Opus” — the strip about a penguin that was the clear favorite among new options. (Some would like to see “Opus” added daily, but it’s only offered once a week.)
To make room, we’re dropping the bottom-five finishers mentioned above as well as “Close to Home,” “Cathy,” “Doonesbury,” “Frank & Ernest” and “Luann.”
The whole article is an interesting read on the comic poll survey results.
It’s good to see that newspapers are finally taking some initiative and giving readers fresher strips. Some strips are classics and will always be around. Others have had their day, and they need to make room for newer talents.
