Editorial cartooning Newspaper industry

Joel Pett: You’re killing us

Joel Pett’s weekly ‘Toon-op” subject is Black Ink Monday and the current situation in the editorial cartooning industry.

And so the cartoon lightbulb labeled Black Ink Monday clicked on, and cartoonists’ gloves came off. The idea was to draw attention to corporate journalism’s budget cutting, which has sliced through the skin, fat, bone, muscle and nerves of the newspaper industry and now threatens our vital organs, not to mention the stem cells that, if carefully manipulated, could spawn the next generation of readers.

  1. Sir, I wasnt aware that you possess a Pulit. Congrats. I am still with Flynt, 28 years now. I just recall how you knew who I was back at that convention. Larry is amazingly political now in the magazine, as cartoonist we are driven to do almost all editorial stuff. I disagree with the philosophy, that is not what I think young horny guys buy HUSTLER for, but I am not the boss. But I have learned to draw a great George Bush. Must be tough there in Republican country to voice what you truly think. I love the freedom Larry provides us, I am a Liberal, but sometimes I feel a bit hinky about doing cheap shots at the admin, even though they deserve it.
Sometimes our local newspaper, which is liberal in tone, thankfully, runs one of your toons. It is always nice to see. I really like Stayskal, (sp), I think out of Chicago, so free with his pen, knocks me out.
Well, hope this finds you well,
    fellow toonist, sincerely, John Billette.
