Editor and Publisher has a story about an editorial cartoon by Mike Luckovich that includes the names of all 2000 servicemen and women who have died in Iraq.
“I was trying to think of a way to make the point that this whole war is such a waste,” said Luckovich, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Creators Syndicate. “But I also wanted to honor the troops I believe our government wrongly sent to Iraq.”
Luckovich told E&P that he spent 12 or 13 hours this past weekend writing in most of the names — roughly in the order of when the soldiers died. The Journal-Constitution’s publisher and various editors were also involved in the effort — checking that all 2,000 names were there, looking for spelling errors, doing a test printing to see if the names would be readable in the paper, and, when it looked like the names might not be readable, giving permission for the cartoon to be published much larger than Luckovich’s drawings usually appear in the Journal-Constitution.
The story also includes reports of reactions.
Thank you very much letting us leave our comments on the war. I got a son serving over there as a truck driver he drives the big semi on convoys. Today is the first of aug., last night convoy was hit one american soldier was killed. The other who was on the truck had his leg blown off. My son call today that they were going out on convoy today and told me all this. I lost my wife March 14,2005 and the last thing she asked was for me too watch over our kids. I sufferd a stoke in Oct. of 2005 and it did effected my health I do not longer work because of this. I worry about my son everyday I serveded in Viet nam fof a year and a half. So I know what he is going throught his mind being there he’s my younges son. I think they should get all our troopes out of there. Thoses people are used to war President Bush should get them out of there. There has being a lot of lies in this aminatration and the people are tried of all thje lies we are told. All he is doing is leaving wifes and kids without fathers. He does’t have family serving over there he does’t care who gets killed he never served in a war I don’t think much of him or chency trhey are both making money out of this war. So may GOD BLESS ALL OUR SOLDIERS OVER THERE AND GET THEM HOME SAFETY. TTANK YOU ONECES AGAIN.

Thank you Carlos for leaving your message. I sometimes feel it’s becoming trite when talk show hosts thank those who served in our military for their service, but reading your message humbles me that there are those such as yourself and your son that are willing to serve in hostile countries on America’s behalf. Thank you both. I wish your son God’s speed in a safe return.
