Tooning In With Editorial and Magazine Cartoonists

Jules Feiffer, RIP

A bit surprised that Bob Englehart‘s has been the only tribute to Jules Feiffer from the editoonists.

It came out the same day as Jules’ funeral home obituary.

The Games People Play

The New Yorker has a new game where the player puts cartoons in the order they appeared: Laugh Lines.

Trigger Warning

My cartoon, The Pardon Family, struck a nerve with the libs. Enjoy these rants:

….

Every artist appreciates compliments, and I got some kudos on this cartoon, but the responses above are like gold for an editorial cartoonist. Obviously, I hit my target.

Cartoonist Gary Varvel explains why Biden pardons Bad, Trump pardons Good.

As for triggering…some people read Gateway Pundit, some people read Politico.

Location: The Upper West Side

Rag Radio host Claire Davenport spoke with Bob Eckstein to learn more about where West Side Rag’s Friday cartoonist gets the inspirations for his work.

As for how he goes from inspiration to final product, Eckstein says he’ll start work at 5:30 in the morning; once he’s got a firm idea (the hard part), he needs just an hour or two to finish the drawing. A draft idea he submitted to the New Yorker one recent morning was accepted, turned into a polished cartoon, and published immediately, all by the time many people would have been just starting their second cup of morning coffee.

SNL Animated Shorts – First up: God

Was there ever a more reliable laugh on Saturday Night Live than Robert Smigel’s TV Funhouse cartoons? … But the show has been relatively cartoon-free since the mid-2000s … So it was a surprise on this weekend’s SNL, hosted by Timothée Chalamet, when the words “An SNL Animated Short” popped on the screen…

Cracked tells us about new animated satire on Saturday Night Live with the shorts.

“God,” written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidel, is a spiritual sequel to their Washington’s Dream sketches with Nate Bargatze. Like those popular bits, “God” explores the batshit-crazy logic behind everyday things we take for granted.

Sports cartoonist Rob Tornoe

Known around these parts as Editor and Publishers’ cartoon commenter on the press, Rob Tornoe also comments in cartoon form for the Sports Business Journal. This week: Tom Brady the quarterback vs. Tom Brady the color guy.

Ward Sutton – Ann Telnaes – Jules Feiffer

Ward Sutton via his Facebook page is a late add to our Stand With Ann list.

Also at Ward’s Facebook is his tribute to Jules Feiffer, from his parents to his children.

Since you brought up Ann

The Pulitzer-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes hasn’t granted many interviews since she resigned from the Washington Post to protest the censorship of her (now famous) cartoon. I was honored that she agreed to appear on TBR Podcast, and it’s a conversation you won’t want to miss.

The [Andy] Borowitz Report interviews Ann Telnaes, unfortunately behind a paywall.

As long as we are updating

Metro’s cartoonist Guy Venables has received heaps of praise as he claimed the coveted crown of Pocket Cartoon Series of the Year.

The talented scribbler ended fellow cartoonist Matt Pritchett ‘s 11-year winning streak and was praised for his sketches by judges at the Professional Cartoonists Awards in London last night.

After our report on The Splats Awards Metro profiled Metro’s own Pocket Cartoon winner Guy Venables and included a gallery of 2024 cartoons hand picked by the cartoonist.

    1. Fancy bumping into you here, fellow commentator. I drew one for my webcomic, too, Wednesday, I think.

  1. Thanks for the reminder about how utterly insufferable Gary Varvel is.

Just as a reminder, this guy lives in Indiana. All 3 branches of the state government, including a supermajority of the state legislature, are made up of guys who think exactly the way he does. If he ever wanted to meet a liberal in real life, outside the internet, he’d have to go to Indianapolis, maybe Muncie if it isn’t summertime. Even if those liberals might sneer at him, they have no political power whatsoever.

One of the comments after his post trotted out the old line about liberals being the “kids upset about being picked last for dodgeball” and it kinda works—his ilk are the kids shoving nerds into lockers just because they can.

    1. Gary Varvel cartoons might as well be generated by an A.I.

Just feed Photoshop Generative AI a transcript of the previous day’s talk-radio output (preferably from Salem Radio Network or its like) and watch it spit out a Gary Varvel cartoon.

  2. Mike Peters did an editorial comic tribute to Jules Feiffer on January 23rd.

(Note, if a newer editorial cartoon has replaced this one, just use the navigation arrow to go to earlier strips to find it.)

    1. Thank you. I only see Peters’ editorial cartoons occasionally (not sure where).
It remains an unsolved puzzle to me why neither Andrews McMeel Syndication nor GoComics has added Mike’s editoons to their rosters after signing those and Mother Goose & Grimm two years ago.
