Wayback Whensday: Star Hawks and Tarzan
Skip to commentsNinety-six years ago yesterday was the debut of the daily Tarzan comic strip by R. W. Palmer and Harold Foster adapting Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan of the Apes story into an illustrated format for newspapers.
But we will feature that story in four years when the centennial comes around.
Today we are immersing ourselves in the Russ Manning (born two days before the Tarzan comic strip debut) Tarzan comic strips, because ERBzine has recently set up a page showing all of Manning’s Tarzan comics and more.
The ERBzine Russ Manning Tribute page shows ALL the Manning Tarzan strips, daily and Sunday from 1967 to 1979, plus Manning’s Tarzan and related ERB comic book work. And there is a mother lode of bonus material, like a look at Russ’ Star Wars daily comic strips. All in all a wonderful place to spend hours and days to enjoy the works of a master cartoonist!
That January 7, 1929 day also saw the arrival of a Buck Rogers comic strip by Philip Nowlan and Richard Calkins for newspaper readers, and again we will hold off on featuring that until its 100th anniversary. Instead we’ll check up on a descendant of that Buck Rogers comic strip stuff.
We thank John at the World of Monsters blog for once more entertaining us with the two-tiered comic strip Star Hawks by Ron Goulart and Gil Kane, this time with CHAPTER THREE: REBELS (01/06/78 – 03/18/78) in two parts: Part One – Part Two.
