Doug Marlette’s friendship with best selling author Pat Conroy to be focus of book festival panel

Doug Marlette, Pulitzer Prize editorial cartoonist and author, has enjoyed a 30 year friendship with Pat Conroy, best-selling author of “The Great Santini” and “The Prince of Tides.”  For the last 10 years they have had nearly daily phone calls with each other. Doug described the calls as “It’s kind of like having a witness to things that we both apprehend.”  Both will be speaking at the North Carolina Festival of the Book and the topic of their discussion will be “The Lessons of Decades-Long Friendship.”

The book festival is in Durham North Carolina and Doug and Pat will speak this Sunday at 1:30 PM.  All events are free to the public.

  1. Would love to attend a speaking engagement of Pat Conroy. I’ve I read all his books and wish there were more. My father grew up in South Carolina as a kid. I spend summers at my grandparents in Leeds, SC (a very small community out from Chester). I had a sister that was schizophrenic from age 19 until her death at age 60. Reading Beach Music was like reading my life. I found myself laughing and crying at the same time reading those sensitive parts. They really cut deep into my life.
Getting back to my grandparents, my granddad ran a general store and my grandmother kept the house. They were Howard and Mae Virginia McCallum. My grandmother was the best cook in world and a great lady. She read all the newspaper she could get her hands on for a small community and she could hold her own with anyone that came into the store to sit and talk about current events and all that was happening in the world. I spent my life growing up in Mississippi but left at the age of 21 for a more interesting life. I’m Pat’s age (62) so we grew up in the same time and with many of the same challenges and battles with family problems. Spent time in therapy just getting through the disfunction. Never resolved my difference with my mom. That was sad but out of my hands and timing. If I were a writer, I could write a book. Just a little different. Wally Lamb wrote a wonderful book “This Much I Know Is True” with much the same feeling as that Conroy. Anyway, I would love to hear Conroy speak. If any engagements come up, put me on the list.

  7. I recently read the two books by Doug Marlette and feel I had found another great author.
I have been unable to find the eulogy you gave.
Sould I please get a copy for our book club?
Thank you and so very sorry for your loss.
