The Aragonese Association of Comic Creators (Asociacíon Aragonesa de Autores de Cómic) has called on European public institutions, governments, universities and libraries to stop using AI generated art in promotional material until European laws protect artists.

They write (translated via Google)

The platforms that use Artificial Intelligence to model and design images need three parts to generate them, which are divided into people, computing and data. They spend huge sums of money on the first two; but the third, the accumulated data resource, they want to get for free.

These hundreds of thousands of stored data that they use to generate their designs have been stolen and hoarded as their own from the different web domains and social networks of the creatives, the most vulnerable and precarious part of the equation.

As long as we do not have regional, state and European laws and directives that protect the violated copyright of designers, the AAAC calls on public institutions and entities – city councils, universities, libraries, State Government, regional governments and other local entities – not to use them for their publications and posters. Using them represents an improper use of our work, which is what the image generating platforms using Artificial Intelligence provide.

There are many of us active professionals, as well as new talents, who are waiting for our opportunity to work; an opportunity that should be facilitated – or at least not hindered – by these entities. And it is useless to promote and advocate for culture with events and actions that revolve around it if our rights are violated and our work is made precarious with these platforms or others.

If the legislator or the high official who must look after the public good resorts to an unethical and highly questionable practice that violates our rights, we do not want to think about what the private sector will do, which does not have to set an example of anything.
