Barbara de Vries and The Hawley Garage announce the inaugural “Sunday Brunch at The Hawley Garage” event slated for Sunday, October 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. This gathering will feature poetry readings by poets Sharon Mesmer and Erica Miriam Fabri, alongside an exhibition that showcases more than 50 famous cartoons by New Yorker cartoonists David Borchart and Bob Eckstein. A New Yorker Cartoonist Reveals Life Beyond Illustration

In his new book, Q&A, Adrian Tomine answers questions about dedicating his life to creating cartoons, illustrations, and comics and what’s next.

Bryan Hood for Vanity Fair talks to Adrian Tomine about his book of essays about cartooning.

The result is Q&A [link added], the cartoonist’s attempt to answer some of the most common questions he’s gotten over the course of his career, as well as help illuminate what it is like to dedicate one’s life to comics. Across the slim volume’s 165 pages, he covers how to properly pronounce his name (“toe-MEE-neh”), goes into detail about the tools he uses to draw his comics (including photographs of each implement), and explains how he began contributing to the New Yorker (youthful hubris and a “lucky break”). Tomine takes pains not to be too prescriptive, but he also breaks down how to pace a scene, gives suggestions for writing better dialogue, and preaches the benefits of thinking through parts of a story while doing household chores.

Small Press Expo 2024: Single Panel Gag Cartoon Panel

Cartoonist Mike Lynch points us to The Absurdity of Single Panel Gags panel.

From the SPX YouTube Channel, here’s video of a panel of gag cartoonists talking about what they do.

The surreal world of single-panel gags is one that’s easy to enjoy and difficult to conceive on one’s own. Moderator Sofia Warren [Sofia was sick and missed the event, so Amy filled in] leads a panel of fellow New Yorker cartoonists consisting of Lonnie Millsap, Sara Lautman, Amy Kurzweill, and Hilary Campbell on the art and science of perfecting an art form with a deep and venerated sense of history and tradition.

So yeah, The New Yorker gets all the gag/magazine cartoon notice but there are a bunch of other magazines and outlets still buying and publishing gag cartoons. And you’d know that if you subscribed to The New Gag Recap.

Ron Coleman’s first issue of The New Gag Recap has been issued.

The Gag Recap is a marketing newsletter for cartoonists and gagwriters. Each issue describes the cartoons numerous publishers are buying and provides you with contact information so you can submit to them. In addition we search for new markets and in each issue report the ones we find.

Along with publisher information (sample below) there is also other useful information and news.

The Air Mail rates above are really decent. Of the magazines listed the pay rates range from $5 to “$675 – up.” That last being The New Yorker for a first time cartoonist, long time New Yorker cartoonists earn far more.

Subscription information from new editor/publisher (and established cartoonist) Ron Coleman:

You can subscribe by the month for $7.00 per month, or you can subscribe by the year for $70.00 per year.  The annual subscription saves you $14 per year.

  5. Find the payment for your current Gag Recap subscription. Then on the lower right hand side of the page find the link that reads REMOVE PAYPAL AS PAYMENT METHOD.
