Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, If I Did…

I would certainly love to be at the September 28 opening of The Larry Todd Retrospect at The Willits Center.

According to The Ukiah Daily Journal:

In addition to the exhibition, Larry Todd will be present for an opening reception on Sept. 28 from 6-9 p.m., where visitors will have the chance to meet the artist and discuss his career, inspirations and artistic process.

This lightens my heart because it was two months ago word came out that Larry had entered hospice care:

Word as it that underground cartoonist and painter Larry Todd is under Hospice care. Larry was best known for his Dr. Atomic comix, his psychedelic painting Moby Gleep, his carnival murals and work with the Air Pirates.

Update: Just to be clear, Larry is still with us, so don’t post any obits just yet. After all, this guy is Dr.Atomic.

I am happy to learn that Larry is healthy enough to plan on attending the exhibit.

You know what else I love? New Flash Gordon and Dale Arden art by Jim Keefe, former chronicler of their adventures.

Cartoon Crossroads Columbus opens its four day festival today but it is Friday September 27 when Jim Keefe hosts a Flash Gordon 90th anniversary party in Columbus as part of the festival.

As CXC is taking place during Banned Books Week that will be a topic of panels:

The 10th anniversary of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus this weekend will look at the alarming trend from the lens of those who found their work in these crosshairs.

Art Spiegelman’s Maus has frequently appeared on banned book lists [link added].

Unfortunately it is too late to attend the opening reception tonight unless you live in Columbia, but…

“An Ariail View” an exhibit featuring original political cartoons and paintings by South Carolina artist Robert Ariail will still be around for a couple months.

Fortunately there is time to plan for the October 18 opening of the Adam Zyglis exhibit in Buffalo.

And if you miss the opening of “Ink & Insight: 20 Years of Adam Zyglis Cartoons” the exhibit will remain for eight or nine months for your enjoyment.

It opened earlier this month but Ralph Steadman: And Another Thing will be on display into December 2024.

The American University Museum in Washington, D.C. has details.

The New Yorker is nearing its 100th anniversary (February 21, 2025) so I’m sure that will be a topic at…

The 25th New Yorker Festival in N.Y.C. on the last weekend of October 2024. Among the already scheduled guests are cartoonists Emily Bernstein, Jason Chatfield, Amy Hwang, Victor Varnado, and I’m sure others will go.

And let’s not forget:

The joint Association of Canadian Cartoonists/Association of American Editorial Cartoonists Convention is just a week away in Montreal from October 3 to October 6, 2024.
