We talk a lot about the new economy for cartoonists. This video ought to be a case study of what to do (not just cartoonists but syndicates).
Here’s what I note Stephan is doing right:
1. Have something worth selling (Pearls Blows Up: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury book)
2. Produce viral marketing (video)
3. Engage with your audience (Facebook, Twitter, blogs)
4. Work with people who get it (e.g. John Glynn/Universal Uclick)
Don’t forget “making a podcaster edit an hour and a half long video interview for like 25 hours.” π
#5: Get someone to edit it so that a joke that’s worth 2 minutes doesn’t get extended for over 6.
6. …?
7. Profit!
That was pretty humorous… and John Glynn was a pretty decent actor. Haha!
I think Terry may be onto something here.
Judging from her EDGE CITY book cover design, clearly less is more:

Well done, Terry!
Funny stuff. Of course you’d have to have connections like a Stephen Pastis or Tom Gammill to pull it off. I agree with Terry, it could use some editing down. John Glynn does a pretty convincing PO’ed person. π
305 views is a far cry from what I would call viral marketing.
Okay – I noticed that his other films have over 30K views – that’s better. Unless it’s just him watching it over and over a few times a day.
Ha! I love the ending.
Do you want to tell Mark, or shall I…?
“I think Terry may be onto something here.

Um….is that supposed to be sarcastic, Mark? We had to put a lot on our book cover–it’s the probably the only book we’ll ever get. At least you can take it all in in less than 5 minutes.
By the way, since you refer to me as “her”, I guess I didn’t make much of an impression when I met you at the Rueben awards,
Reuben awards.
I thought this video was hilarious.
You should open up next year’s episode with a close up of john’s face made up like the Joker in full manaical grin. The camera pulls back to reveal him in a straightjacket in the corner of a padded cell. He vows revenge on Pastis for stealing both his wife and immense business Empire (I know, bit this is ultimately fictional) GlynnJoker then. devises a way to escape—do it quickly for Terry’s sake—and then have him confront Lex Pastis who has taken over ALL the syndicates. You can take it from there, I gotta go.
Sorry, REUBEN awards.
I knew I shouldn’t have gone in a cocktail dress.
That was great! Thumbs up to Stephan & John.
It’s also important to have a constantly evolving personal style, like if you wear a white t-shirt, jeans, and baseball cap in 2008, then you should move on to a white t-shirt, jeans, and BACKWARDS baseball cap by 2010!
A fun video and great example of what viral marketing should be (though I, too, think it could use some editing/cutting here and there). Also agree with Alan on the four things Stephan is “doing right.”
John really was a good actor. Is that really his house? Really?
I want to know because I live on the same street.
…maybe he built a set like in the movies….
