PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Editorial cartoonist Signe Wilkinson has made a career drawing images that reflect contemporary American life.
Wilkinson says she is now mostly retired, but her cartoons appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News for 35 years.
Now, about 30 pieces of her work are on view at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
“The current exhibit is called Cartoons as Political Speech in Colonial and Contemporary America,” says David Brigham, Librarian and CEO of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Signe Wilkinson spoke at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania on June 11, 2024. In her talk, she provided an overview of her own career and the history of political cartooning. The talk served as the celebratory opening for the document exhibit Cartoons as Political Speech in Colonial and Contemporary America, which touches on Philadelphia’s role in late colonial and Revolutionary politics, burgeoning publishing and print culture, and transatlantic commerce and communication.
