Cartoonist Comic strips Documentary

“This is The Story of Scott Adams and the Death of Dilbert”

“Success is a fickle thing. Some people will struggle their whole life looking for that one idea that will make them millions, while others will simply stumble upon it on their first try.

“The latter is the case for Scott Adams, the person who made a fortune off his comic strip Dilbert.

“What makes this man so interesting to me though is he could have easily coasted off that success for his entire life. But he instead decided to devote his time to multiple other business ventures which each failed in their own unique ways. And eventually even his crowning achievement would come crumbling down due to nobody’s fault but his own.

“This is the story of Scott Adams and the death of Dilbert.”

  1. I don’t think I want to spend 48 minutes of my life hearing about Scott Adams.

  2. I can’t believe there was a time I ever enjoyed ‘Dilbert’

Even looking back at his earlier comics, the red flags were there. Especially when it came to his portrayal of female and foreign workers. Oh well, like all tragedies the signs only become obvious in retrospect.

    1. His life is better than ever!
Visit to his channel on locals.com and see.

  3. I hope this means that TDC will have fewer posts about Adams (or none), now that he’s “fallen.”

  4. Totally agree with AJ. But I watched it anyway. It did fill in some holes with information I didn’t know about. It’s not something I would recommend watching unless you are curious about what he’s really like and what caused his downfall. But it’s well-done and moves along. I suggest being ready to pause the video to read some of the text bits and comics shown, since the narrator doesn’t always read all of them.

  5. If you can imagine yourself as a person 50 years in the future, never having heard of Scott Adams and watch it objectively, it’s an interesting piece.

  6. Thanks for the link – I’ll watch that whilst I’m inking my comic strip.
I thought Dilbert was very funny decades ago. But I was working in an office job dreaming of becoming a syndicated cartoonist.

  7. OMG that was worth watching for the Dilbert Hole story alone. About 10 minutes in.

  8. People who say they never enjoyed “Dilbert” or thought Scott Adams was interesting weren’t there at the time. Both the rise and the fall of this important comic strip are interesting stories. As for Adams, he’s crazy like a fox. He always knows what he’s doing.
