J.D. Crowe takes to skies to see Gulf oil spill

Mobile Register editorial cartoonist J.D. Crowe had a first hand look at the Gulf oil spill over the weekend. Over on his blog he writes about his experience and posted several aerial photos he took aboard a US Coast Guard helicopter.

I’ve been drawing about the oil spill daily, and have been hoping for a chance to see the thing in real life. My opportunity Saturday, courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard, based at Ground Zero in Mobile.

We flew out of the mouth of Mobile Bay about 120 miles to the “The Source,” the name given to the site of the

Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion where the wild well gushes.
