Belated birthday wishes to cartoonist Alan McClure. Also belated is the addition of Mr. McClure to our Senior Strippers list on the occasion of his turning 100, rather than at 90 as is customary.
Cartoonist Alan McClure continues to create art decades after finding humour in news stories for Sydney Morning Herald readers.
Shuana Foley for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation celebrates the cartoonist’s centennial.
While in London McClure began a career in cartooning for a children’s book illustrator in 1949.
McClure continues to make art in his now home of Wagga Wagga in southern New South Wales.
His most recent illustrations were for a book called Barking Mad — An Abled Dog’s Musings About Disabled Humans.
Alan McClure now tops the 2023 list of Senior Strippers below, cartoonists who for 90+ years continue to survive “the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.”
Other cartoonists added to the list since last year, either through birthdays or discovery, are Phil Bissell, Stephen Fabian, Jerry Fearing, Thomas Sawyer, Lucien De Gieter, Bunny Hoest, Quentin Blake, and Sid Harris.

At least two listed have sadly passed on: Jim Ivey (on July 14, 2022) and Gerald Potterton (August 23, 2022).
Thanks Charles. I thought I had edited Jim Ivey out from the active list, but didn’t.
I took personal note of Gerald Potterton’s passing as co-director (when you make a film with Buster Keaton you have to share director credits for his scenes) of The Railrodder, didn’t realize at that time (read: forgot) he was on our list of senior strippers.
