Cartoons Against the Axis

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is hosting an exhibit of 47 works of cartoon art that were part of a traveling exhibit to help sell war bonds. The artists were legendary Charles Addams, Saul Steinberg, Peter Arno, Mary Stewart and Sid Hoff.

Their cartoons are variously violent, patriotic, frightening and funny, lampooning Hitler, Hirohito and Mussolini, as well as their armies and ambitions.

But when Allied forces ultimately prevailed, the original works were forgotten, stored away at the Art Students League of New York. They were never exhibited again.

The exihibit runs October 8, 2005 through February 6, 2006.
