The final print editions of The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, and The Mobile Press-Register, the three newspapers that comprised Advance Local’s Alabama Media Group, rolled off the presses this morning.
The final editions of the three largest newspapers in Alabama have one unifying theme: Alabama Media Group journalists will continue to evolve with readers and keep delivering high-quality, digital journalism.
The newspapers, which will publish their last editions Sunday, each have the same 1A cover with a note from Editor-In-Chief Kelly Ann Scott and President Tom Bates. The note thanks the communities for their support of their newspapers and the readers who have joined them online as the company shifts to all-digital news delivery.
As far as we know Alabama Media Group editorial cartoonist J. D. Crowe remains on staff.
I grew up in Huntsville; the Times was my hometown paper and it gave me my start by publishing me when I was in my teens. This is a sad day.
3 Alabama newspapers owned by Advance cease print even when they withdraw Dilbert from their comics pages – in digital?
The switch to digital-only now was planned months ago.
My hometown paper the Atlantic City Press just announced it will only print 3 days, Tues, Thurs, Sat, starting April 3. With all the casinos and a robust ad department, this was quite a shock. Being a Lee paper it streamlined it’s comics as well.
Just curious….wondering if there are any daily newspapers left in the state of Alabama. If there are, how many are still publishing?
Being fast and loose with the definition of a “daily” newspaper (at least five days a week) there are five, as shown on The Freedom Forum’s Front Pages ( https://www.freedomforum.org/todaysfrontpages/# )
But they don’t show every newspaper so there may be a few more (wishful thinking?).
The Alabama Press Association counts 113 newspapers ( https://www.alabamapress.org/active-papers/ ). Of the first ten on their list one gets up to four days a week, the rest being once or twice weekly.
Yeah, we are witnessing the end of an era.
