Screening Cartoonists

Tom Toles is the most decorated journalist in the history of Buffalo news media. He cut his teeth as an editorial cartoonist at The Courier-Express, moved on to The Buffalo News, where he earned his Pulitzer in 1990, and then succeeded the legendary Herblock at The Washington Post in 2002. His work was syndicated in more than 200 newspapers across the country.

Investigative Post interviews retired editorial cartoonist Tom Toles.

The world according to a Buffalo original: Trump and climate change are major threats; editorial cartooning is at risk, along with the newspapers that publish them; and artificial intelligence is going to have huge ramifications across society.

 

These drawings were part of a workshop led by Paul Noth. He’s a cartoonist and writer from Milwaukee who has worked a variety of interesting jobs.

“I’ve been a cartoonist for The New Yorker magazine for 17 years. I’ve created animated shows for television, for Conan O’Brien, for Nickelodeon,” Noth noted. “I’ve had three middle school novels, and I’ve made educational comic books.”

This is his second visit to the Brookfield Academy this year as part of the school’s artist series.

“I think we’re all responsible to our communities we can’t expect people to come in and fix things for us and also on the ground level at some point,” Alcaraz says.

Facebook has promised to do more to fact-check Spanish posts on its platform.

As the midterm elections near, Alcaraz hopes his messages can be educational.

“You know the information is out there; you have to look at it,” he said. “‘Use the coco that God gave you.'” That’s an old thing my mom used to say.”

The AAEC is proud to present the new documentary on cartoonist Bill Mauldin: “If It’s Big, Hit It.” This feature-length film on one of the most important political cartoonists of the 20th century is part of the CXC Festival.

The film will be shown at the 2022 AAEC Convention/CXC Festival.
