Addams Family musical based on original cartoons

The New York Times reports that the Addams Family stage production currently in Chicago has received mixed reviews and producers have brought in Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks to “take over and work with the creative team to make 11th-hour fixes to the production.”

What might be more interesting for cartoonists is that the play is based on Charles Addams’ comic cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s New Yorker.

Nathan Lane as Gomez Addams… this is a show I’d love to see.

Making a musical out of a series of often silent gag cartoons? So crazy it just might work …

I had my fill with remakes, reboots & retreads.

It’s nice to see Nathan Lane working. I just never thought he’d be playing Gomez. Uncle Fester on the other hand….

An actor friend of mine is in this cast, and says it’s got some great music and sets…and that they’ve been tweaking the story during it’s run in Chicago. I hope it runs for a long time, ’cause he’ll make good money! And I once saw an off-Broadway show based on Edward Gorey cartoons that was really innovative and dark, so I hope this production taps into that.
