Mike Keefe wins 2009 Berryman Award

Mike Keefe, editorial cartoonist for the Denver Post, has been awarded this year’s 2009 Berryman Award for Editorial Cartooning for a wide-ranging series of drawings that poked fun at politicians, journalists and public perceptions. Honorable mentions went to Matt Wuerker (Politico) and Ann Telnaes (washingtonpost.com). A Certificate of Merit was given to former Memphis Commercial-Appeal cartoonist Bill Day for a series of graphically powerful images highlighting child abuse.

The award carries a $2,500 prize and a crystal trophy which will be presented at the 27th annual National Press Foundation Awards Dinner, February 16th, 2010.

From the press release:

In one of Keefe’s entries, he mocks the health care debate and the public’s refusal to pay for infrastructure improvements with a drawing showing a family bumping along a miserable, rocky road. “WHY AREN’T YOU USING THE HIGHWAY?” a woman asks her husband. “I DON’T BELIEVE IN PUBLIC OPTIONS!” he snarls in return as a terrified baby in the back bawls his head off. Keefe has been the editorial cartoonist of the Denver Post since 1975.
