Make Room on Your Bookshelves
Skip to commentsDoonesbury, Garfield, Star Wars, Peanuts, and more. This week’s releases include:
#SAD!: Doonesbury in the Time of Trump by G. B. Trudeau
Featuring Doonesbury Sunday strips created since President Trump’s election.
From the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist whose acclaimed Yuge!: 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump blew up the bestseller list, comes the sequel millions prayed would be unnecessary. #SAD: Doonesbury in the Time of Trump tracks the shocking victory, the inept transition, and the tumultuous eternity of POTUS’s First 500 Days.
Currently #1 on Amazon’s Best Sellers in Comic Strips list.
Garfield Complete Works: Volume1: 1978 & 1979 by Jim Davis
Garfield Complete Works: Volume 1, 1978 & 1979 launches the consummate collection of Jim Davis’ phenomenally successful comic strip. Since its debut in 1978, Garfield has reached historic heights, becoming the world’s most widely syndicated strip.
This one surprises me twice – I had heard nothing of it and, for a new Garfield title, it is way down (#76 at this writing) on Amazon’s Best Sellers in Comic Strips list. Little, if any, publicity about it. Searched “Complete Works” at the Garfield site and there are no results. Publisher plans on new volumes every six months.
Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Vol. 3 by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson
Featuring nine key stories from Star Wars Legends written by Archie Goodwin and illustrated by Al Williamson. Included are “A New Beginning,” “Revenge of the Jedi,” “Doom Mission,” and “The Final Trap,” among others in the complete newspaper strips from July 26, 1982 to March 11, 1984.
The final volume collecting the entire 1979 – 1984 newspaper comic strip.
The Complete Peanuts: 1967- 1970 (Vols. 9 & 10) Paperback Gift Box by Charles Schulz
Vol. 9 of the newspaper strip introduces Franklin and Snoopy’s original owner, Lila, returns; in Vol. 10, Peppermint Patty runs afoul of her school’s dress code, Lucy declares herself a “New Feminist,” and Snoopy returns to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm on a speaking engagement!
Here comes my rant (rated PG): I am pissed at these boxed sets being offered for less than what the original two volumes cost. There I am buying The Complete Pogo editions as they are being published and later I walk into Barnes and Noble and see them offered as a boxed set for less. At least when I bought the collected Sandman by Neil Gaiman, in a previous century, DC had the decency to offer us the slipcases to purchase separately.
Big Nate Goes Bananas by Lincoln Peirce
The school year is winding down, and Nate can’t wait for summer vacation: baseball, beach trips, and…overripe bananas? Yuck!
Join Nate and the gang for more shenanigans in this newest collection of Big Nate comics!
Dick Tracy Dead or Alive #1 by Lee & Michael Allred and Rich Tommaso
The All-American detective just made the biggest collar of his career, and it only cost him his job! But now the honest cop has packed his bags for “the city by the lake,” and its criminals better watch out!
Okay this is a standard comic book, but it is comic strip related. The link on the title has a nice preview.
Criminy by Ryan Ferrier and Roger Langridge
Daggum Criminy’s peaceful life is suddenly interrupted as pirates invade his island, casting Criminy’s family out as refugees into the wild unknown in search of a new home. Soon, the Criminys find themselves hopping from one strange locale to another, each with their own bizarre environment, people, and challenges; putting Daggum and fam in constant peril as they search for a new peaceful place to call home.
Since I wandered off a bit with Dick Tracy here’s a comic completely unrelated to comic strips, but I adore Roger Langridge efforts. There’s a nice preview here and a review here. Available October 2 in bookstores, available today from your friendly neighborhood comic shop.
