Canadian Newsprint Tariffs Overturned

In a huge piece of news for the newspaper industry, the United States International Trade Commission overturned a Trump administration decision to tariff Canadian newsprint.

From the New York Times story:

The unanimous decision by the five-member body eliminates tariffs that have been in effect since January, handing a win to small and medium-size newspapers, which have struggled to absorb the cost of higher newsprint and have made cuts, including layoffs, as a result.

Some media outlets were predicting a 15% to 20% increase in newsprint costs. This could have had a devastating effect on an industry where margins are shrinking every year.

  1. I wonder if that NC newspaper will backtrack and reinstate the comics they cancelled now that the tarrifs are off.
