Awards Editorial cartooning

Walt Handelsman wins second Pulitzer Prize

Walt Handelsman, editorial cartoonist for Newsday is this year’s Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial cartooning – his second such prize (the first was with the Times-Picayune in 1997).

The Pulitzer committee said Handelsman’s was worthy of the high prize because of “his stark, sophisticated cartoons and his impressive use of zany animation.”

This seemed to the be the first year that animated editorial cartoons were the deciding factor in the prize this year. All three finalists had submitted their animations in addition to their print work. In Walt’s case, he entered 10 print and 10 animated cartoons.

There is video of Walt learning of his winning status on the Newsday web site.

Congratulations to Walt.
