Roy Peterson passes at age 77

Sad news from the Vancouver Sun.

In more than 40 years with The Vancouver Sun, editorial cartoonist Roy Peterson won more National Newspaper Awards than any other Canadian journalist. Behind all that success, friends remember a low-key man with a wry sense of humour who was a willing mentor to many younger cartoonists.

“He didn’t try to teach them the art of cartooning,” said longtime friend and former Sun colleague Jack Lee. “He mostly concentrated with them in trying to broaden their thought patterns so they would come up some something different from the ordinary facts.

“That’s what makes a good cartoon.”

I met him only once, but have admired his artwork for years.

  1. A true gentleman indeed?and one great talent. (The Van Sun lost its heart and soul when they let him go back in 2009.)

  2. Thank you for that wonderful link Ms. Konar. I found nearly 500 of Roy Peterson’s cartoons since 2000 in less than a minute! This is a valuable site and I plan to explore it often in the future.

  3. You’re welcome, Donald. While you’re on there you should also check out some of Len Norris’s fabulous stuff.
