US Postal Service lost millions with The Simpsons

From the Washington Post:

In a move that wasted $1.2 million in printing costs, the Postal Service produced 1 billion of “The Simpsons” stamps. It sold 318 million.

A Postal Service inspector general’s report singled out the overproduction of stamps marking the 20th anniversary of the cartoon as an example of failing to align stamp production with demand.

Pocket change for a government organization that is estimated to lose $15 BILLION this year. D’OH!

  4. … and when the Simpsons stamps first came out, I headed to several Post Offices to pick up a whole bunch of them.
    Most didn’t have them. I eventually found some, but not as many as I would have purchased had they actually been distributed!

  6. Here’s a thought … sell them at a discount or allow them to be forever stamps (regardless of the 44¢). Since any 1¢ stamp is a loss to begin with, this saves everybody any further expense.

  7. Are they still in circulation? I thought postage stamps are now 45 cents or FOREVER mode!
