The battle of Comic Sans

I noticed a while back a website called “Ban Comic Sans”. The premise is simple enough – mock the font and question it’s very existence. A few comics use the font. Vic Lee’s Pardon My Planet comes to mind.i noticed a new site that celebrates the font. Their motto:

WE ARE THE COMIC SANS DEFENDERS. WE FEAR NO FONTS AND WE WILL MAKE THE WHOLE WORLD COMIC SANS.BECAUSE HELVETICA IS SOOO 2011

The site features famous logos, marketing collateral that has been reworked using Comic Sans.

I’m only commenting so the header at the top of the comments doesn’t say “Currently there are 1 Comment”.

Oh, and also, Comic Sans is crap. There, I said it!

Comic Sans battled Zapf Dingbats and all Helvetica broke out.

It’s apparent Comic Sans is a joke

Yes, Scott — McSweeney’s speaks for me.

I’ve noticed fewer “Oh, god, nobody likes fruitcake” cartoons this season. Maybe they’re all on their blogs writing posts about how much everybody hates Comic Sans.

    *yawn*

In terms of typography, “Comic Sans” has very poorly designed letter forms, just look at that hideous clumsy unbalanced “s” form. In contrast, Helvetica, actually designed in the 1957 (not 2011) is an excellent example of a professionally, well designed modern Swiss type face, with beautiful proportions and an actual family of weights besides just bold. There’s no comparison from that standpoint, its like comparing a Steinway concert grand with a dinky keyboard.

That being said, comic sans does have its uses, and perhaps it is so common in the comics world because nothing better has been designed to suit the same needs. The best I can think of is the font that used to be on all the Tintin books – fun yet nicely proportioned and legible, and not nearly as clumsy looking as comic sans.

I agree with Mike that comic sans obviously is common probably because nothing better has come along. I use mostly comic sans, but have been looking for something better for years.

Y’all have WAY too much freetime on your hands. I hope to get to a point in my life where i can spend this much time thinking about fonts. 😀 😀 😀
