Mallard Filmore dropped from Statesman-Journal

Bruce Tinsley‘s “Mallard Filmore” has been removed from the Statesman-Journal (Salem, OR) in favor of Scott Stantis’ “Prickly City.”

We ink-stained wretches of the Opinion page hold no influence over choice of the comics, alas. But Michelle Maxwell, the Life editor, kindly provided this explanation of the decision:

Mallard Fillmore topped our list of the comic readers most disliked. Doonesbury did come in second.

Like Dilbert, Doonesbury is both loved and hated. We had many people who included Doonesbury in their most liked comics. The same cannot be said for Mallard Fillmore, which had a small amount of people who listed it as their favorite.

  3. I agree that it’s better than Mallard but it feels rushed and the punch lines feel self congratulatory and stilted a lot of the times. I still think there’s a viable market for a good conservative strip.

  5. I’ve noticed that Mallard Filmore is being dropped more and more. I don’t know what his client list looked like a few years ago compared to today, but I suspect he’s losing more papers than he’s gaining. I think the emergence of Prickly City and State of the Union has allowed editors to get rid of Mallard with other conservative strips that are less in-your-face.

  9. Mallard not funny? I disagree with you. I thinks he’s very bright and great for a belly laugh. Right on Mallard!!

    BTW..I think Doonesbury is the worst cartoon there is and I’ve often wondered why it’s been around this long. It’s not only not funny, it’s stupid in content and revelance to the real world.

  11. I suppose it is a human tragedy to read about a fellow like Bruce Tinsley getting arrested twice for DUI, and to read about his decline as a cartoonist. BUT, this sort of thing couldn’t happen to a more appropriate person. There are MANY excellent cartoonists, some new, some who have been around for years and decades, and many who are no longer with us. One thing is certain; I, like scores of millions of other people in this nation, and perhaps around the world, look forward to “the funnies”, especially on Sundays. But I will not miss Mallard Fillmore, even a little bit, EXCEPT for one thing… I have always found Conservatives, especially those who are PROUD of their Conservativism, to be far too self-righteous, self-centered, and selfish. They are annoying, at best, and often down-right aggravating. Mallard Fillmore, perhaps like his creator, is a protypical Conservative… hyper-critical of others, and apparently somewhat hypocritical in his personal life.

    As for MY favorite cartoons, I have liked BC for decades, along with other classic strips such as Hagar the Horrible, Frank and Ernest, Dilbert (especially when he hits a nerve), and I suppose my favorite of all is Born Loser, I guess because I can relate so well to the central character ( I LOVE the opening icon, especially the busted straight flush). Anyway…I happened to be looking at an especially annoying strip by Mr. Tinsley, and I Googled him up. I thus discovered this site, and I may as well pay a bit of homage to all the cartoonists who make newspapers and magazines more bearable, and who add so much to television when “strips” such as the Simpsons go on the air. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE MORE STRIPS ON TV, ESPECIALLY THE POLITICAL ONES??? I’ve run across a couple of Jib-Jab creations and loved them…such efforts are FAR too uncommon on television and the internet.

Just keep feeding them what we the media elite want them to know. We have conditioned an adequate number of dupes out there that will keep them in line for us with creepy ad hominem from the files we’ve loaded into the crypt.”
