Rare Arctic Circle caption contest created

The Daily Green, a web site dedicated to living green, is offering its readers a one-time caption contest of a cartoon created by Arctic Circle creator Alex Hallatt. The Daily Green editors will whittle the choices down to 10 and then Alex will pick the winner who will receive a signed and framed print with the winning caption.

The Daily Green is an exclusive online publisher for Arctic Circle.

Correction: Despite The Daily Green assertion that they are the “exclusive online publisher of Article Circle,” Alex assures me that they are not.

Justin Bilicki wins Science Idol contest

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has announced this year’s winner of their Science Idol: Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest. The winner is Justin Bilicki. The annual contest hopes to draw attention to the growing problem of political interference in federal government science.

“It has become increasingly difficult to trust anything or anyone associated with power,” said Bilicki. “If you can simplify social and political messages, they become powerful and influential. Drawing this cartoon was my small effort at fixing this large problem.”

Judges for the award included: Dave Coverly, the creator of Speed Bump, Wiley Miller, the creator of Non Sequitur, Kevin Kallaugher (KAL), editorial cartoonist at the Economist; Mike Keefe, editorial cartoonist at the Denver Post; Signe Wilkinson, the Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist at the Philadelphia Daily News; and Jesse Springer, the 2007 Science Idol. After more than 20,000 votes were cast, Bilicki’s cartoon came out on top. In addition to holding the title of national “Science Idol,” Bilicki will receive a cash prize and a trip to Washington, D.C.

Global Media Awards competition taking entries

Concerned Scientists contests announces fnalists

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has announced the 12 finalists in their third annual Science Idol: Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest. The public now has to opportunity to vote for the winner.

The UCS received hundreds of cartoon entries from artists. A panel of cartoonists (Dave Coverly, Mike Keefe, Kevin (KAL) Kallaugher, Wiley Miller, and Signe Wilkinson) along with Jesse Springer, winner of last year’s Science Idol contest, helped narrow down the entries to the 12 that will appear in the 2009 UCS scientific integrity calendar.

Voting is open through August 8. The winner’s cartoon will appear on the cover, receive a $500 prize, a trip to Washington D.C. and an autographed copy of KAL’s “Kal Draws Criticism.”

Winners announced in Kyoto Cartoon Contest

England’s Martin Honeysett and Iranian Shahrokh Heidari are among the winners of the Kyoto International Cartoon Contest. The contest is designed to raise the awareness of the public and of governments alike on the critical issue of global warming.

Coverly ‘toon material for Parade caption contest

Parade magazine is using holding a caption contest using a Dave Coverly cartoon. Dave is a regular contributor to the mnagazine’s cartoon. The cartoon (as seen above) depicts Batman and Superman sitting at a bar. The winning caption will appear in a future issue.

Science Idol scientific integrity contest begins

The third annual “Science Idol: The Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest” is now taking submissions. The annual contest seeks to educated people of alleged interferences of government censoring, suppressing, or altering scientific documents.

Judging this year’s competition include: Speed Bump creator Dave Coverly, Kevin Kallaugher of The Economist, Non-Sequitur creator Wiley Miller, Mike Keefe of the Denver Post, Signe Wilkinson of the Philadelphia Daily News, last year’s winner, Jesse Springer

Both Amateur and professional artists are welcome to submit cartoons. See web site for details. Entries are due by June 11, 2008

My Cage announces contest winners; new blog

Last January, I reported that My Cage creators Ed Power and Melissa Dejesu were running a writing and fan art contest for their feature. They have announced the winners, as well as created a new blog for their feature.

Winners of each contest will be featured in the strip. They’ve posted the drawings of the winners already.

Syndicated cartoonists to be judges at community comic symposium

Sally Forth writer Francesco Marciuliano and On a Claire Day creators Carla Ventresca and Henry Beckett will be one of six comic professionals that will be judging this year’s Lakeland Community College’s annual Comics Contest. The annual comics symposium is usually held in the spring, but this year it is a more of a series exploring the graphic novel. Harvey Pekar is one of this year’s special guests. Harvey will be in Ohio on March 12.

The contest deadline for entry is March 12th.
