After 14 hours of hell, my Facebook account is working again with no explanation,“ the artist wrote. ”Every time I login, my screen went completely white. I tried login on 3 separate computers and all 3 went blank. My tech buddy, Brandon Peterson, figured out that it was not a physical problem but someone from Facebook admin just put a block on my account.
So you couldn’t afford an original Bill Watterson oil painting of Cul de Sac character Petey, or any of the two original strips that went to auction earlier this year. But maybe you can afford to buy one of five autographed Complete Calvin and Hobbes by Watterson or maybe even one of the five Watterson autographed Team Cul de Sac books.

Chris Sparks announced that Watterson has agreed to provide the autographed books to be sold and or auctioned off at Heroescon and other comic conventions this year. Proceeds to go to the Michael J Fox Foundation.

Correction: The original post had a photo of the original complete collection box set. The set that Watterson is signing is the newer paperback collection. Photo has been updated to reflect this news.

The Tribune in San Luis Obispo found out that Jim Borgman, Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott were all going to be in one place and sent a reporter over for an interview. The result is a lot of tidbits on how these hugely successful strips came about and the working relationships between the creators. Jerry and Rick co-created Baby Blues and Jim and Jerry co-created Zits. It’s a unique cartooning triangle.

A teaser from the interview – Jim and Rick both describe how they fed Jerry with material:

BORGMAN: And then shortly thereafter, within five years or so, I remarried. I brought two kids to the table and Suzanne had three. So for a while we had five teenagers in the house. So even if I wasn’t the writer, I was kind of like the embedded reporter – the embedded cartoonist – taking field notes and sending them to Jerry, just about themes that come up and tensions. I’m not good at writing full scripts, but feeding that meat into the grinder – I enjoy doing that.

KIRKMAN: It was the same with me. When we started, I had two kids, and Jerry didn’t have any kids. So all of those things going on at home kept coming out at some point. So I just unloaded on Jerry. Jerry’s got a remarkable ability to take a long, boring story and boil it down to two or three panels. And suddenly it’s funnier and more potent.

Lincoln Peirce’s comic Big Nate is being adapted to a stage production.

Jason Loewith, the Big Nate playright in the Huffington Post:

Our adaptation celebrates Nate’s artistic expression, while letting the audience know he’s a kid like them: struggling to do well while the elements at P.S. 38 rage against him. And we try to find the theatrical equivalents of cartoon conventions: onomatopoetic dialogue (a whole teachers’ lounge scene filled with “blah blah blah,” “yak yak yak” and the occasional “ooga booga”); projected cartoon bubbles and drawings halt the action, mimicking the frame-by-frame movement of a comic strip; musical riffs become the equivalent of those frozen moments of surprise, shock and joy that a great drawing can nail in an instant.

Michael Canva talks with Lincoln about the play.

“I think Nate is a fairly theatrical kid,” Bobbitt tells Comic Riffs. "His thought bubbles are like direct addresses to the audience. He’s got an arch-nemesis and a love interest. Many dramas and operas have been written on this subject.

Paraphrased from the TV show AfterMASH that ran brief as a sequel to M*A*S*H* comes this line:
Colonel Potter’s wife: “Don’t worry about the dishes, dear. We have a dishwasher”
Klinger’s Korean wife: “Oh, I’d love to meet her.”

Paraphrased line from Berkeley Breathed’s character Opus about women and dishes. It wasn’t even the punchline, but somehow stuck with me. “They stack the dishes so we have to wash the bottoms too.”

What’s your favorite punchline or phrase you wish you had written or that have stuck with you?

Michael Cavna interviews Doonesbury creator Garry Trudueau about the creation and writing of an upstart political drama TV show available through Amazon Studios. The show is called Alpha House based on the premise of this article in the New York Times wherein four U.S. Senators live together as roommates in Washington D.C. The show brings in some heavy weight actors such as John Goodman, Mark Consuelos, Clark Johnson, Matt Malloyand and debuted with a guest star Bill Murray.

MC: Was writing for the pacing of a 24-minute comedy particularly difficult or easy, given your four-plus-decades as a supreme [print] political satirist? I’ve talked with some daily cartoonists who found the transition to TV comedy writing especially challenging.

GT: For me, all writing is hard. Experience hasn’t made it any easier, just less scary.
