A new Perry Bible Fellowship collection is due out in November. The new book is entitled The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack and features an introduction written by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody. The book will include a complete run of PBF including the strips that came after Nicholas Gurewitch, previous collection “The Trials of Colonel Sweeto.”

Publishers Weekly has posted an interview with Nicholas in which they discuss his involvement in writing a pilot for the BBC based on PBF.

PWCW: Colonel Sweeto prompted Dark Horse’s largest order ever from the U.K. Diamond distributor. Why do the Brits love you so much?

NG: Well, they have Perry Bible Fellowship in the [British newspaper] the Guardian. And people have said that the [strip’s] humor has a British flavor.

PWCW: Speaking of which, you’re also working on a television pilot for the BBC that’s based on PBF. How’s that coming along?

NG: I’ll be adapting a couple of the strips for the pilot, and I just got the news the other day that they wanted to make it longer because they liked the 12-minute treatment I sent. They want to make it a 30-minute pilot. I’m actually working with a British television company, Endemol Entertainment. A number of people there had ordered some prints from me, and apparently someone brought them into the office. It became known amongst them that they really liked the comic, and [making the pilot] was just a decision that came about organically because of that. They all realized they liked the strip, and said, “Why don’t we do a show?”

Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, who teach comic art at New York’s School of Visual Arts, have authored Drawing Words and Writing Pictures: A Definitive Course from Concept to Comic in 15 Lessons and were interviewed on National Public Radio.

Abel and Madden have been teaching comic art at New York’s School of Visual Arts for the past eight years. They realized they did not have a definitive, structured text to use in class, so they took on the task of creating a lesson-based textbook for use in college-level, studio-class settings.

They also had another reason for wanting Drawing Words and Writing Pictures. Both Abel and Madden are accomplished comic artists, but neither of them had received formal training. They learned on the job, channeling the little information that was available from various sources.

Corey Pandolph’s, creator of Barkeater Lake, (and not to mention Toby, Robot Satan, Lil’ Spencer’s Adventures AND The Elderberries cartoonist), is releasing a second collection of his Barkeater Lake feature. The new book, due out at the end of this month, is entitled “Escape From Barkeater Lake” and features the second year of Corey’s feature with eight pages of color Sundays. Also included are two pages of “reader-inspired bacon recipes.” The book can be pre-ordered through his web site now. You can also purchase both collections 1 & 2 together at a bundled discount.

I read the first Barkeater Lake book earlier this spring and can easily recommend this feature to just about anyone. My first impression was that the feature was a bit silly, but Corey has created a strong character driven world that is easy to fall into and tag along for the ride. I hadn’t realized how much I had come to like the characters until the end of the book when Delores’ (one of the main characters) father comes to rescue her from from the crazies in the town. I found myself offended at his judgmental attitudes toward the other characters. I knew then that I was a Barkeater Lake fan.

If your not familiar with Barkeater Lake, you can catch it over on gocomics or his website.

Bill Watterson on Richard Thompson

And oh, those gorgeous drawings! With a mix of rambling looseness, blotchy crudeness, and sheer cartoony grace, Thompson’s expressive pen line is the equal of any of cartooning’s Old Masters. Thompson has a very sharp eye and a command of technique we almost never see anymore. He reminds us that comics can be more than illustrated gag writing, and that good drawings can bring a comic strip’s world to life in countless ways that words cannot. The artwork in Cul de Sac bowls me over. It’s a pleasure to study long after the strips are read.
