Get a first year Garfield original for $5k

Ted Dawson over at “Three Men in a Tub” blog reports that an original Garfield comic strip is for sale an eBay store for $4,499. The seller writes that it is thought to be the 25th strip published in papers and one of the earliest Garfield originals to be sold publicly.

Two Peanuts cartoons auctioned for $106,270

Two original Peanuts comics strips were auctioned off at Philip Weiss Auctions, according to E&P, for a combined total of $106,270. The two comics - one daily (selling for $52,110), one Sunday (selling for $54,160) prominently picture Snoopy. They were dated 1957 and 1962 respectively.

Just six months ago, an original Sunday dating 1955 sold for $113,525.

Allison Barrows’ doodle sells for $1k at fund raiser auction

Allison Barrows, creator of Preteena, recently raised $1,000 for the annual “Doodle for Hunger” auction. The yearly celebrity auction helps fund the Capuchin Food Pantries in New York feed, clothe and provide counseling for the poor. This year’s event raised over $400,000. Allison’s doodle of PreTeen characters Teena, Stick and Jeri, started bidding at $350.

Original Peanuts sells for $113,525

An original Charles M. Schulz Peanuts Sunday strip, dated April 10, 1955, recently sold for $113,525. The auction, held by Heritage Auction Galleries, took place on November 15-16.

“This particular piece is the first Peanuts original ever to sell in the six-figure range,” said Ed Jaster, vice president for Heritage. “The demand for Schulz’s Peanuts art has been steadily growing over the last several years. In the last six years, Heritage has sold 61 Peanuts dailies and 30 Peanuts Sundays.”

I suspect that the recent popularity of the Fantagraphic collections, the Schulz and Peanuts bio, and the American Masters helped in driving the price up.

Garry Trudeau to make attend fundraiser for Center for Cartoon Studies

The Center for Cartoon Studies has announced that Doonesbury creator, Garry Trudeau, will make a rare public appearance on behalf of the school on October 22. The event costs $50 a person. A framed original strip is also being auctioned off in a related event. Auction begins on October 17 and ends on the 23rd. Visit their web site for location, times and how to place bids.

Walt Handelsman to Host This Year’s Cartoons and Cocktails Auction

This year’s Cartoons and Cocktails will be hosted by Walt Handelsman, this year’s Pulitzer Prize winner. The annual event is held at the National Press Clubs and features a silent and live auction whose proceeds then go to scholarships for needy high school students pursuing journalism, a student paper and the Cartoonists Rights Network.
