I agree with Mike that comic sans obviously is common probably because nothing better has come along. I use mostly comic sans, but have been looking for something better for years.

In terms of typography, "Comic Sans" has very poorly designed letter forms, just look at that hideous clumsy unbalanced "s" form. In contrast, Helvetica, actually designed in the 1957 (not 2011) is an excellent example of a professionally, well designed modern Swiss type face, with beautiful proportions and an actual family of weights besides just bold. There's no comparison from that standpoint, its like comparing a Steinway concert grand with a dinky keyboard.

That being said, comic sans does have its uses, and perhaps it is so common in the comics world because nothing better has been designed to suit the same needs. The best I can think of is the font that used to be on all the Tintin books - fun yet nicely proportioned and legible, and not nearly as clumsy looking as comic sans.

Yes, Scott -- McSweeney's speaks for me.

I've noticed fewer "Oh, god, nobody likes fruitcake" cartoons this season. Maybe they're all on their blogs writing posts about how much everybody hates Comic Sans.
