News & Observer finalizes line-up with 42 comics
The News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) has finalized their comic page line-up after expanding their comics page last year to 42 comics. The six new comics that ran in trials since last year are: Agnes, Argyle Sweater, Arlo & Janis, Deflocked, Scary Gary and Wizard of Id. Three comics were dropped: Sylvia, Watch Your Head and Marmaduke.
Thad Ogburn, the features editor with the News & Observer at the time of the great expansion tells me that the expansion and efforts to add newer features has been a positive move.
Our latest one-week poll showed that our efforts to freshen up our comics over the past two years had paid off. Three strips in the Top 10 among readers (Pearls Before Swine, Pickles and Frazz) were new to us in the past two years.
Sadly, with the selection finalized, Thad, who has since moved on to the Metro Editor position, will not be involved with the comics in the future.
And now, after seeing this guest comic process through to completion, I’m officially turning over comics oversight to my successor as Features Editor, Debra Boyette. I’ve got enough on my plate as Metro Editor. Debra had asked me to stay on with comics for a while, and, of course, I couldn’t stay away anyway. But now I’m going to try to (after I advise her on replacing Opus on Sundays!)
BTW, It’s still not too late to vote for “Thad for President” as a write-in candidate.
