IBD looks at how Scott Adams made it big with ‘Dilbert’
Investor’s Business Daily has an interesting article on how Dilbert creator Scott Adams got into comics. The article might not shed a great deal of new information on Dilbert history, but it’s worth your time.
Adams continued to draw, but mostly for amusement at the office. “I would often draw little comics on a white board and occasionally draw for a presentation,” he said.
His co-workers liked the art. Adams even ran a “Name the Nerd” contest. He drew him on the board, and colleagues suggested names.
“My boss wrote down the name Dilbert, and I ended the contest then and there, because that was clearly the winner,” he recalled.
Adams’ drawings might have stayed cooped up in a cubicle. But then came an opening in the form of a Cassady letter.
