Brian Fairrington designing college mascot
Brian Fairrington, syndicated editorial cartoonist with Cagle Cartoons, is designing the new look for “Artie the Artichoke” - the school mascot for Scottsdale Community College. You can see Brian’s work on the voting page where students vote for their favorite.
Fairrington said he enjoyed working on the project. But the cartoonist said it’s challenging to create a character from an inanimate object.
“After all, it’s an artichoke,” he said. “To give that a life is harder as opposed to an eagle or a bulldog.”
This isn’t the first time an editorial cartoonist has tackled a school or team mascot. Mike Lestor is reported to have designed the Buzz mascot for Georgia Tech.
