Opus coming to the big screen?
Several puzzle pieces point to the possibility of Berkeley Breathed’s Opus making the leap to the big screen. Coming Soon.net has an entry for a Opus film entitled “Opus: The Last Christmas” with a release date of December 19, 2008. The production studio is The Weinstein Company, the same company behind CG animated films such as Hoodwinked and Doogle.
It also appears that Berkeley himself will be the director and screenwriter. The plot summary is only as follows, “An animated comedy starring the popular Opus the Penguin from Berke Breathed’s “Bloom County” comic strip.”
Berkeley isn’t a stranger to animation. According to IMDB, Berkeley wrote a television special called “A Wish for Wings that Work” that was directed by Skip Jones and featured the voice talent of Robin Williams.
The Wikipedia entry for Opus mentions that the movie project might be in limbo, but in a press release issued by The Weinstein Company regarding their acquisition to the rights to “The Nutty Professor,” it mentions that Opus is a project in the works.

That explains the recent storyline where Opus battles with the CGI version of himself.
