John Deering honored for sculpture
John Deering, editorial cartoonist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, has been honored by the Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission for his sculpture “Testament” which depticts the Little Rock Nine who integrated Central High School in 1957. The award is called the Drum Major award. Every year the commission singles out individuals who shared the same ideals and efforts as the late Reverand Martin Luther King.

John Deering was one of my more promising students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock..I gave him a few pointers on his Vietnam Veterans’Memorial, but he has gone far further than I in the field of sculpture. I wish I had thought of the Little Rock Nine..my hat is WAAAAY off to you John. Thanks for Strange Brew, too!
